Performance Charecteristics of Three Sides Glass Covered Smooth Solar Air Heaters

Abstract


Top side glass covered smooth solar air heaters have been emphasized to great extent during the last decade. Top side glazed and artificially roughened solar air heaters have also been analyzed and investigated in plenty, by the numerous of authors. Three sides roughened and glass covered solar air heaters have been analyzed and investigated very recently. This paper represents the performance characteristics of three sides glass covered smooth solar air heaters as compared to top side glass covered smooth solar air heaters. The results on heat transfer coefficient, friction factor and thermal performance have been represented and discussed. The values of Nusselt number and thermal performance in three sides glass covered collector have been found to increase in the range of 16% to 20% and 25% to 30%, respectively, as compared to top side glass covered smooth solar air heaters, while the friction factor remains almost unaffected.
